The Water Committee met in session on Tuesday evening, August 22, 2000 at 7:00 p.m. with the
following members present. Mayor Ludwig, Rossiter, Sherwood, Griesbaum, Water Superintendent
J. Vaughn, M. Slater and Fire Chief Heindselman.
Vaughn stated a lot of the hydrants here in town are really old and he has checked into the
cost of a 2 1/2" gasket is $8.50. Vaughn stated he has checked around and if the Fire Dept.,
can purchase the hydrants for $450 his distributor would like to have two semi loads. City Clerk
Spindler stated she had checked with the City of LaBelle and their City Clerk was not a ware of
any purchases being done by the Fire Dept., regarding hydrants.
Griesbaum asked if the purchase price, included everything needed to install the hydrants.
Vaughn stated the hydrants have a big rubber gasket and meg-a-lug and all's they need to do is
tighten up the bolts. He does have to purchase sleeves.
Sherwood asked about how many of the hydrants were leaking. Vaughn stated they have found
six they spray them when flushing the hydrants, but when they tighten them down they do not
leak.
Sherwood asked Vaughn if he is going to replace the hydrants down by Tony Jacob's while the
sidewalk is out. Vaughn stated this would be a good time to do this. Vaughn stated a valve
should be put in before each hydrant, but this had not been the pass practice. Griesbaum asked
about the cost of the valves. Vaughn stated between $200 to $300. Sherwood asked about the
hydrant at E. Logan. Vaughn stated to install a new hydrant at this location would require them
to shut off seven valves due to the looping.
Discussion was held on the different types of hydrants in the City. Vaughn stated he was not
sure, there could be five different types, without having to dig down and find the names.
Vaughn stated MidWest Meters cost of a hydrant is $655. Rossiter stated he could use the area
near his home as an example, for his concern. According to the list from 3rd & Marion to 5th &
Marion a hydrant was not working properly. And he had concerns if there was a fire would the
Fire Dept., be able to use them. Vaughn stated they would still be able to use the hydrants even
if they leaked, because the hose would pull the water a different direction. Rossiter stated he felt
Vaughn should stay working on the list of hydrants and see what can be done. Griesbaum asked
if the hydrant near Logan's could be replaced a soon as possible.
Discussion was held on when the Water Dept., would be flushing the hydrants again. Slater
stated 09/23/00.
Having no further business before the Committee, Griesbaum adjourned the meeting and called
for another Committee meeting to be scheduled 09/26/00 at 7:00 p.m.
